Jane Eyre
Written by Charlotte Bronte

Summary
The book starts with Jane, the protagonist, losing her parents. Jane is only 10 years old, so
she moves in with her aunt, Mrs. Reed, and her children. They treat her very poorly.
Eventually, Jane is sent to a charity school for poor girls, where she also is treated poorly. The
girls are punished roughly and receive little to no food. Jane starts a friendship with one of
her classmates, Helen Burns. Helen teaches her about patience and forgiveness. She passes
away from tuberculosis. Jane is devastated but still manages to finish school. Despite her bad
relationship with the charity school, Jane decides to work there as a teacher. After a few
years, Jane leaves the school and starts working as a governess at Thornfield Hall, a large
country house owned by Mr. Edward Rochester. There, she needs to raise Adele Varens, a
young French girl. The mother of Adele was a former wife of Mr. Rochester. Even though Mr.
Rochester is a mysterious and somewhat grumpy man, they soon start forming a strong bond
between him and Jane. The bond between them is getting more romantic and Mr. Rochester
confesses his feelings towards Jane. He asks her to marry him and she happily accepts. On
the day of their wedding, Jane finds out that Mr. Rochester is already married to another
woman, Bertha Mason. She is mentally ill and is being kept hidden in a locked room at
Thornfield. This upsets Jane and she runs away from Thornfield. While roaming through the
countryside, she meets the Rivers family. Containing St. John and his sisters Diana and Mary.
They provide a job and a place to sleep for her. Jane finds out her uncle passed away and she
inherited a large sum of money. She shares the money with the Rivers family, who turned out
to be her nieces and nephew. St. John asks Jane to come with him to India and marry him,
but she rejects. Jane returns to Thornfield and finds out the building has burned down.
Birtha passed away and Mr. Rochester got severely injured in the fire. He has lost his sight
and his left hand. They renew their relationship and get married. Mr. Rochester gets partially
his sight back. They have a son together.
