The province is undergoing significant infrastructure development, and rural communities require steady access to building materials for housing, schools, and roads. Road freight plays an essential role in bridging the gap between suppliers in urban centres and customers in remote areas. Effective forecasting provides managers with insights into future demand levels, enabling accurate planning of vehicle capacity, scheduling, and resource allocation (Chopra and Meindl, 2023). Since both market uncertainties and limited historical data are common in rural markets, applying multiple forecasting techniques enhances accuracy and reduces risk (Hyndman and Athanasopoulos, 2021). This discussion applies five demand forecasting methods and five quantitative forecasting methods to predict the demand for building materials in KZN for 2025 and 2026. It further examines the differences and relationships between these approaches and identifies the most suitable methods for a road freight business. Demand Forecasting Methods Demand forecasting methods are primarily qualitative, relying on judgment, experience, and insights rather than purely numerical data. These methods are particularly useful in emerging or uncertain markets, such as rural
