Define the term 'motivation' and explain the motivation model
Motivation can be defined as the set of forces that initiates, directs and makes
people persist in their actions and efforts to accomplish a goal.
The motivation model has the following elements:
• Needs are the physical and emotional requirements that must be met to ensure
human survival and wellbeing.
• An individual’s unsatisfied needs and wants create an uncomfortable, internal
state of tension that must be resolved. This tension leads to action from the
individual and action leads to effort.
• The effort of an individual is a function of their initiation, direction and
persistence.
• The effort by an individual leads to performance.
• The performance of an individual leads to a state of satisfaction.
• We can differentiate between two kinds of reward: extrinsic and
intrinsic. Extrinsic rewards are tangible and visible to others and are given to
employees based on their performance in completing certain tasks. Intrinsic
rewards are the natural rewards associated with performing a task or activity for
its own sake.
Differentiate between the content and process theories of motivation.
The content theories of motivation attempt to identify what the needs and
wants are that people want to satisfy
The process theories of motivation emphasise the process of individual goal-
setting and the evaluation of satisfaction after the achievement of goals.
