1.1 The design process in Technology Education
The design process is an effective problem solving framework because it gives
learners a clear way to move from an identified need towards a practical solution.
Technology Education is meant to develop technological literacy while helping
learners use knowledge, skills and judgement to solve real problems in ways that
consider people, society and the environment (NST2602/501 2020:3). The process
is therefore more than making an object, because learners must understand the
problem, think through possible responses, test their ideas and judge whether the
final product actually works.

1.1 The design process in Technology Education

Technology Education is meant to develop technological literacy while helping
learners use knowledge, skills and judgement to solve real problems in ways that
consider people, society and the environment (NST2602/501 2020:3). The process
is therefore more than making an object, because learners must understand the
problem, think through possible responses, test their ideas and judge whether the
final product actually works.
In Technology Education, the design process follows investigation, design, making,
evaluation and communication, commonly expressed through the IDMEC process
(NST2602/501 2020:5). These stages are useful because they guide learners
through the problem without forcing them to accept the first idea that comes to mind.
Investigation helps learners understand the need, available materials, users and
limits, while design encourages several possible ideas before one solution is
selected. Making turns the chosen idea into a working product, evaluation checks
whether the product meets the original need, and communication allows learners to
explain their decisions and findings.
1.2 Why the process is effective
The strongest part of the design process is that it develops both practical ability and
higher order thinking rather than separating thinking from making. The study material
links the process with interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference and self
correction, which are important when learners must improve an idea after noticing
weaknesses (NST2602/501 2020:9). This makes the process suitable for
Technology Education because technological problems are often not clearly
structured and may have more than one acceptable solution.
The process also supports creativity because learners can investigate alternatives,
connect old solutions with new needs and improve the function of existing products
