RUGBY

RULES AND REGULATIONS

George Alexander

, The rules and regulations in rugby vary throughout the different age grades.
For example, U9s only have 3 men in a scrum whereas in adult rugby there are
8 men in the scrum. In this leaflet I will be talking about a few different rules in
rugby and certain situations that they are used in.
Here are some of the main rules:
 Knock on- If you drop the ball forwards in rugby, the other team get a
scrum.
 Deliberate Knock on- If you try to intercept an opponent’s pass and
knock it on, then the opposition get a penalty.
 Game time- The game is split into 2, 40 minute halves with a 10 minute
break in between.
 Line-ups- Each team starts with 15 players and can have 7 substitutes.
 High Tackle- All tackles have to be below shoulder height otherwise the
other team get a penalty and you can even get a yellow or red card.

Offside:

One of the main rules in rugby is the offside rule. In rugby you cannot be
offside in open play however you can be offside in rucks, mauls, scrums and
lineouts. Also if you catch the ball when your teammate kicked it from behind
you, this is considered as offside as well. If you are considered to be offside,
then the other team gets a penalty.
