This essay is a biopsychosocial assessment for a 16-year-old African American client named Amella Abraham. The assessment outlines the various challenges Amella is facing and provides a comprehensive overview of her life, including her personal history, relationships, and current mental and physical health. The document highlights the following key areas: Presenting Issues: Amella is struggling with feelings of social rejection and bullying from both her family and schoolmates. She has recently started vaping to cope with stress and emotional pain, and has become nicotine-dependent. She is also addicted to gaming, which has led to a lack of focus in school and constant fatigue. The school counselor recommended treatment after a vaping incident. Background: Amella was assigned male at birth and was named Amell Dejon Abraham. At age three, she understood she was a girl and began to express her gender identity through play and dress. This has led to ongoing family conflict, as her conservative and religious parents do not accept her gender identity, viewing it as a "phase" and preferring a religious approach to therapy. Family and Social Life: The relationship with her parents is strained, and while her mother is lenient, she is still unsupportive. Her brothers, Amante and Audell, have mixed reactions, with one being partially supportive and the other pushing her to be more masculine. At school, she is isolated and bullied. Amella finds emotional support through online gaming friends and a few associates in the LGBTQ+ community. Education and Strengths: Amella is a high school student who excels in STEM, particularly mathematics, but her academic performance has declined due to her inability to concentrate. Despite her challenges, she is described as resilient. Her school counselors are supportive and affirm her gender identity, and she is open to therapy. She has access to counseling for transition care and screenings to help her family understand her issues

Client Demographic Information

Name: Amella Abraham

Age: 16

Ethnicity: African American

Marital Status: Not Applicable.

Presenting Issue(s)

Amella faces various serious issues that are currently affecting her ability to focus on her

school work and living an everyday life. She feels socially rejected, with direct impact from her

family and schoolmates. She is often seen as an outsider and with weird behavior, which has led

to her being bullied and isolated. She is currently engaged in drug use behaviors- vaping at

school and at home. She admits that she does this to relieve her stress, numb her emotional pain,

and reduce her anger because she feels good when she vapes. Currently, she has difficulty

concentrating in class and even fails to complete her assignments despite previously loving her

studies. She is also nicotine-dependent and cannot go for a few hours without vaping. She is also

currently addicted to gaming and spends a lot of time playing games up to the middle of the

night, leading to her not being able to focus and being confused during the day because she is

constantly tired.

Amella is seeking treatment after the school counselor recommended treatment following

a vaping incident. Her parents are not supportive and often recommend a religious approach

compared to therapy. Amella has struggled with gender dysmorphia and rejection since she was

3 years old. Vaping and bullying started in late childhood and continued through to teenagers.
