D187 Task 4: Monitoring and Communicating Progress in a Differentiated Classroom
Eric Lydic
June 6, 2025
Grade: 2nd
Content: Mathematics
Standard: 2.G.2 Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of the same-size squares and count
to find the total number of them.
Learning Target: Given a worksheet with known rows and columns, the students will create,
count, and record the total number of equal squares by correctly drawing the number of rows and
columns for 5 out of 6 rectangles.
Materials: Partitioning rectangles pre-assessment, How to Partition Rectangles video,
Partitioning Rectangles Google Slides Presentation, Partitioning Rectangles Packet, Elmo
, lOMoAR cPSD| 6861666
projector, whiteboard, teacher laptop, academic language scoring rubric, pencils, partitioning
rectangles scoring rubric
Opener: To introduce this lesson to students, the teacher will explain to students that “Today, we
will be learning how to partition, or split a pizza into equal-sized squares so that we can share it
with our friends! Before we get started, we are going to watch a video to help us learn how to
partition things into equal squares using yummy brownies and counting the total brownie squares
in each pan! Are you ready to cut up some pans of brownies and slice up some pizzas?!”
Lesson Steps
1. Prior to the lesson, the teacher will give students a pre-assessment to see what
information they already know about partitioning rectangles. The teacher will use the
data from the pre-assessment to plan for future lessons based on what information
they already know, along with what information they still do not know or are
struggling with.
2. To begin the lesson, the teacher will say to students, “To introduce this lesson to
