Deepening Understanding of Fungi through Scientific Discourse
Case # 1066
1. Describe specific examples of how the teacher in the video identified in part A does or does not
demonstrate differentiated instructional practices in three of the following areas:
• engaging all students in learning - The instructor definitely engages all students in learning
because she often asks the class their opinion on what she is teaching. For example, at the
beginning of the video the instructor talks about a block of cheese with mold on it. She asks the
class whether they think the cheese is safe to eat if they cut the piece of mold off. She listens to
each student's answer. She could have just said “even though you cut the mold off of the cheese it’s
unsafe to eat.” Instead, she gives the students the opportunity to critically think and apply their
knowledge to the situation. She does this throughout her lesson, by frequently checking in with
students to hear their opinions/thoughts/feedback. She also does this in multiple ways, not only by
asking questions but by having students contribute to whiteboard discussions, small group
discussions, etc. Having multiple methods of engaging students allows for more participation. For
example, a student who is more shy may not want to ask a question in front of the class.
Incorporating small group discussions may allow for that student to have the space to engage in
discussions they wouldn’t feel comfortable doing in a large group setting.
• teaching for success for all students - The instructor teaches for the success of all students
because she incorporates different methods of teaching. She incorporates both visual and verbal
learning strategies. For example, she starts the lesson plan by engaging students with visual
examples of different food items with mold on it. She then begins asking the students what their
