ENG1503
Assignment 1 Semester 2 2026
Unique number: 185373
Due date: 17 August 2026

QUESTION 1 (2 ANSWERS PROVIDED)

The first main point is that many South African businesses struggle to find workers
who have the skills needed in the workplace. More than 70% of employers in the
Western Cape study said that finding properly skilled workers was difficult, while
many also felt that schools and colleges were not preparing young people well
enough for employment (Magidi & Chivige 2026).

The second main point is that the shortages include digital skills, soft skills and
environmental sustainability skills. Employers reported weak computer knowledge,
poor mathematical ability, limited problem-solving skills and low knowledge of green
business practices. These shortages can reduce productivity and make it harder for
businesses to compete and grow (Magidi & Chivige 2026).
