i) eliciting the target language from the context
Teacher: Ok everyone, now let's start our today's lesson. As you see there are two pictures on the
board (pointing to the pictures), what do you think these picture are about ?
Student1: A new car
Student2: Planning a tour
Teacher: Great, Let's write it here (I will write the two answers beneath the pictures) So you have
a new car and you want to plan a tour now. Let's say, If I get a new a new
car, I will visit my friend in Dublin. What are your plans ? Tell me a few !
Student1: Trip to Paris
Teacher: wow, that will be exciting, any other suggestion ? give me three more examples !
Student2: Go on long drive
Student3: Visiting relatives in London
Student3: Driving along the beach
Teacher: Let's write it here (writing the suggestions as the students speak) Did anyone
travel to Paris before?
Student: No
Teacher: Right, Did anyone travel by car to any other destination ?
Student: Sir, New or used car ?
Teacher: Any car, used or new
Student: Yes
Teacher: You must have enjoyed that trip, Ahmed.
Ahmed: Yes I did, Sir
Teacher: Great, So, in order to go on a trip, you need a car, Right ?
Student: Yes Sir
Teacher: Excellent, so in our plans, car is a condition, I mean, If we get it, we'll go on a trip, If we
don't, we may not even plan for a trip. Can anyone tell me why I used the word 'if' ?
Student: Not sure about the car
Teacher: That's right Sam, our plan is based on a condition which is a possibility As I said in my
example: If I get a new car, I will visit my friend in Dublin. So getting a new car is an
assumed scenario and visiting a friend is a result which is likely to happen in
future. Can anyone tell me their example in a sentence ?
Student:1 If I get a new car, I will go to Paris
Teacher: That's a perfect example Ashok, (I will write the example on the left side of the board )
In your example, there is a possible condition and likely result in future, two tenses;
one present and other future and there is an if to make it conditional , Can anyone
tell me any other example ? like If I go to bed late, I'll wake up late !
Student:2 If I study hard, I will get good score in the exam
Teacher: Excellent, So both examples are of a conditional type, Having a
possible scenario and its likely result in future, what is the name of this type of
conditional ? Any guess ! Please, let me know if you have any question in mind !
Student1: First conditional
Student2: Are there other types of conditional sentences ?
