1. Identification and Description of Two Most Important
Environmental Problems in My Community

Community and Geographical Location
My community is located in Mdantsane, a large township in the Eastern
Cape province of South Africa, situated between East London and King
William’s Town. It is primarily residential but also has informal trading
areas, small-scale manufacturing, and public facilities such as schools
and clinics. Despite its vibrant culture and strategic location, the
community struggles with significant environmental challenges that
threaten both public health and economic well-being.

Environmental Problem 1: Poor Solid Waste Management
Poor solid waste management is one of the most pressing environmental
concerns in Mdantsane. The local waste collection service is irregular,
and in many sections, especially informal settlements, refuse is left
uncollected for long periods. This leads to the accumulation of garbage
in open spaces, near taxi ranks, and alongside roads. Residents often
resort to burning household waste, including plastics, which releases
toxic fumes into the air. In market areas, discarded fruit, vegetables, and
meat by-products clog stormwater drains, especially during heavy rains,
causing foul odors and attracting rodents and flies. The lack of
community awareness around recycling and safe disposal worsens the
situation. These conditions not only degrade the visual appeal of the
community but also create breeding grounds for disease vectors that
increase the risk of outbreaks such as diarrhoea and cholera.
