THE DEVELOPMENT OF ATTITUDES TOWARDS UNDOCUMENTED
IMMIGRANTS THROUGH PERSONALITY, IDENTITY AND ETHNIC
IDENTITY

1. Introduction

Attitudes towards undocumented immigrants and other people viewed as outsiders
do not develop from one cause, because personality, identity, family teaching, social
conditions and group beliefs usually work together. The scenario presents
immigrants as people whose belonging is questioned, especially when citizens
believe that outsiders compete for employment, housing, education, health services
or personal safety. Such beliefs can turn a legal status into a broad judgement about
a person’s character, even when there is no evidence that every undocumented

Such beliefs can turn a legal status into a broad judgement about
a person’s character, even when there is no evidence that every undocumented
immigrant behaves in the same way. Human development takes place through an
ongoing relationship between personal qualities and the social environment, which
means that prejudice cannot be understood as a fixed attitude that appears naturally
(Kail et al., 2019). Holland’s personality type theory provides one way of examining
how people differ in their preferred ways of thinking, working and relating to others.
However, attitudes towards outsiders also depend on identity development and
ethnic belonging, since people often judge others according to the boundaries of the
groups that they value (Phinney, 1992). This discussion argues that prejudice
develops when personal tendencies, uncertain identities, strong group boundaries
and perceived competition combine without meaningful contact or critical reflection.

2. Holland’s Personality Type Theory

2.1 Main ideas within Holland’s theory

Holland’s theory proposes six broad personality orientations known as realistic,
investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional personality types. Each
orientation reflects particular interests, values, abilities and preferred environments,
although most people show a combination rather than one completely pure type.
Realistic people often prefer practical tasks, investigative people enjoy analysis,
artistic people value creativity, social people prefer helping, enterprising people seek
influence, while conventional people usually value structure and clear procedures
(Holland, 1997). These orientations mainly explain occupational interests and the
degree of fit between a person and an environment, rather than directly explaining
