, QUESTION 1: Warm-ups, Focus and Creative Process (10 marks)

1.1 It is important for learners to do body and voice warm-ups before a performance
because warm-ups prepare the whole person — physically, vocally and mentally — and
reduce the risk of strain or injury. Body warm-ups increase blood flow, loosen joints and
improve posture, which helps performers move more freely and safely. Voice warm-ups
activate breath support, improve resonance and articulation, and help prevent vocal
fatigue or damage during projection. Beyond the physiological benefits, warm-ups
centre attention and create a shared class rhythm that reduces nervous energy and
strengthens ensemble focus. When preparing learners for a performance I would
explain the purpose of each exercise, demonstrate clearly, lead the class through a
consistent routine that builds gradually from relaxation to more energetic activities, and
allow time for reflection at the end. The routine would be brief but regular — typically ten
to fifteen minutes — and adapted for different ages and physical abilities so every
learner can participate safely and confidently.

1.2 One body warm-up I practised in this module is the full-body shake-and-stretch
sequence. I begin by standing with feet hip-width apart and gently shaking the hands,
then the arms, then the shoulders, moving progressively through the neck, torso, hips,
legs and feet. After a minute of shaking to release tension, I guide learners through a
series of slow, controlled stretches: reaching the arms overhead, bending gently to each
side, and rolling the shoulders and spine. This combination loosens knots, increases
circulation, and allows learners to notice areas of tension they can relax before
performing. One voice warm-up I used is the lip-trill and siren exercise combined with
gentle humming. Learners start by taking a relaxed breath and doing a soft lip trill to feel
steady airflow and breath support. Then we produce a slow siren on an “ng” or hum,
sliding up and down the pitch range to warm the vocal folds and connect chest and
head resonance. This exercise improves breath control, helps smooth register shifts,
and prepares learners for clear diction and safe projection.
