PART A: Using anatomical language describe the body posture known as Anatomical
Position (Figure 1 - See Course Pack). Explain why it is important to have an anatomical
reference posture.
- In the fields of anatomy and medicine, anatomical position refers to a standard reference
posture used to explain the placement of various bodily parts and structures in relation to
one another. The body is upright in anatomical position, with the palms of the hands and
arms facing forward and extended by the sides.
- It is important to have anatomical reference posture because human anatomy and
physiology can be explained in a straightforward and consistent manner using standard
anatomical positions. Many anatomical terminologies are used to describe the relative
placement of different appendages in relation to the standardized position while analyzing
an individual's anatomy. Such terms include proximal and distal, which define how close
or far something is, respectively, as well as posterior and dorsal, which refer to the body's
rear. The standard anatomical position establishes distinct points of comparison that

PART B: Use anatomical terms of movement to describe the transition from Anatomical
Position (Figure 1 - See Course Pack) into the posture pictured below (Figure 2 - See Course
Pack). Note, the order of your instructions does not matter; however, evaluators will need to
follow the instructions to transition between the two postures!

, The anatomical posture to the lunge position transition requires several distinct motions at
various joints. Here is a description of movement in anatomical terms:
- Hip Flexion: Begin with your feet together in the anatomical posture.
Start by lifting and forward moving your right thigh while flexing your right hip joint. Hip
flexion is being done.
- Right Knee Flexion: Bend your right knee as you advance your right leg further. Knee
flexion is shown here.
- Left Hip Extension: As you reposition your left leg backward to stay balanced, your left
hip will also extend at the same time. The left thigh is moved behind you when you
extend your hips.
- Extension of the Left Knee: Extend your left knee to the lunge position, maintaining your
left leg straight, to complete the lunge position transition.
- Right Ankle Plantar Flexion: As your right foot advances and your right knee bends, your
right ankle experiences plantar flexion, which causes your toes to point downward.
- Left ankle dorsiflexion: To keep your balance while in the lunge stance, dorsiflex your
left ankle, lifting your left toes.
- Pelvic rotation forward: During the transition, the pelvic rotates forward to make room
for the right leg's forward and downward motion. The term for this is anterior pelvic tilt.
- Right Shoulder Dduction: As your right leg extends, your right arm and shoulder will
move a little inward and toward your midline. Shoulder adduction is being done here.
- Right elbow extension: If you decide to add a reaching action to your lunge, extending
your right elbow will cause your right hand to advance.
