PART 1: GENRE AND GENRE FICTION (20 points) Question 1 (10 points) To be able to answer this question, you must first carefully study section 1.1 (Learning Unit 1). Pay particular attention to Fuentes's core quote on families of texts. 1) Give three synonyms (i.e. swords meaning the same) for “genre”. (2) 2) Name the names of two critics or theorists who have written about genre. (3) 3) Write a few paragraphs (in your own words) to explain what you understand by the term “genre”. Put special emphasis on the idea of family. (5) [10] Question 2 (10 points) To be able to answer this question, you must first carefully study section 1.2 (Learning Unit 1). 1) Provide four synonyms (words with the same meaning) for “popular fiction”. (4) 2) What are the three main characteristics of popular age fiction? At each feature, briefly describe what you mean by each of these three characteristics of pop fiction (which you have demonstrated). So write a few paragraphs about each feature. (6) [10] TOTAL: LEARNING UNIT 1 [20] PART 2: SOUTH AFRICAN GHOST STORIES (30 points) Question 3 (10 points) To be able to answer this question, you must first thoroughly study section 2.3 of learning unit 2 and complete Activity 2.3 (Learning Unit 2) in the study guide. This includes studying the texts “Definition of the Ghost Story” (Van Graan 2008:11-24) and “Ghost Characters” (Van Graan). Both of these texts are available on e-reserves. 1) Name 2 literary genres to which the ghost story can be connected. (2) 2) Write your own definition of a ghost story. Note that answers transcribed directly from the study guide or any other source will not receive any marks. (8) [10] Question 4 (20 points) To be able to answer this question, you need to thoroughly study and work through learning unit 2 in the study guide. This will definitely work to your advantage if you have already completed Activity 2.8. READ THE GHOST STORY YOURSELF ON E-RESERVES AND DO NOT RELY ON THE INTERNET. STUDENTS WHO HAVE DONE THIS IN THE PAST HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT THE WRONG STORIES. Select any of the following three ghost stories available on the library's AFK2604 e-reserve page: • “In the Tunnel” by Johan van Lill • “My Ghost Encounter” by C.J. Langenhoven • “Woman of the Stormy Night” by Adriaan Snyman Write a set of words in which you analyze your chosen ghost story. In your analysis, you should specifically pay attention to the following aspects: (1) The Ghost Character (2) The occupied space (3) The central event in the ghost story (4) The use of time and/or the importance of the past in the ghost story (5) The theme of the ghost story I suggest that you start your essay with an introductory paragraph in which you briefly outline what you are going to write about, then a paragraph on each of the above five aspects, and conclude it with a concluding paragraph in which you write a summary of the main points of your essay. You should apply these five aspects in your essay to the short story you have chosen and prove your statements with examples or quotes from the text. [20]

Assignment 2 2026
Due date: June 2026

DEEL 1: GENRE EN GENREFIKSIE

VRAAG 1

Vraag 1

bepaalde literêre vorm, klas of tipe waaraan sekere tekste behoort (Lemmer et al., 2019:2).

beskryf as ’n bepaalde literêre vorm, klas of tipe waaraan sekere tekste behoort
(Lemmer et al., 2019:2).

vertellings groei. Soos mense in ’n familie sekere trekke deel, deel tekste in dieselfde
