IMDP Week 2 Exam questions with accurate answers
According to its history, what are the three stages of alpha's
development? Ans✓✓✓ The there stages of alpha's development are
club, organization and society. The significance of these stages is as
follows: for some of the students there was a desire to organize a social
and literary organization (although several members desired to establish
a fraternity). From 1905-1906, the social study club and organization
took shape. From 1906-1907, the embryo of a fraternity grew. With
naming of the organization on Tuesday, October 23, 1906, and
establishing of the club's colors, the move toward a fraternity was
entrenched. Finally, on December 4, 1906 the members decided (by
vote) to become a fraternity.

At what point did the fraternity stop restricting its membership to
"Negroes"? Ans✓✓✓ at the 28th General Convention, Kansas City,
Missouri, December 27-31, 1940, this convention considered "...the use
of the word 'Negro' in the membership clause which referred to 'any
Negro male student' should be changed to read 'any male student'. This
recommendation was adopted unanimously by the General Convention...
This was the first official action by a fraternity established for black
college men for the admission of men of all colors and races".

At what predominantly black institution was the first black fraternity
established and what was the name of the chapter? Ans✓✓✓ The Beta
Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was established at Howard
University, Washington, D.C. in 1907. Brother Eugene K. Jones, who
was president of alpha Chapter at the time, assisted by Brother Nathaniel
Murray installed, initiated 19 men in to Beta Chapter on December 20,
1907.

, Dialogue about the first Black Greek fraternity. Ans✓✓✓ The first
black Greek Lettered fraternity founded was alpha Kappa Nu Fraternity
in 1903 on the campus of Indiana State University. This is considered a
pre-cursor fraternity since it only lasted 14 months. The second Black
Greek Lettered Organization (BGLO) founded was Sigma Pi Phi
Fraternity, Inc. also known as Boule, founded May 15, 1904 in
Philadelphia, PA. Sigma Pi Phi is never quoted as a college fraternity. It
is a fact that Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is the oldest Black
Fraternity existing on college campuses. This information is taken from
Skip Mason's Historical Moments, Volume 1, No. 61 (April, 2001) on
page 6.

Also in Volume 1, No. 19 of Skip Mason's Historical Moments, he states
that "What separates Sigma Pi Phi [first black fraternity on record] and
Alpha Phi Alpha [is that one was the first black fraternity for
professional men and the latter is the first for collegiate men]". Sigma Pi
Phi membership includes men from all "...Greek letter organization s as
well as those who were not."

First Annual Banquet Ans✓✓✓ On Saturday, October 27, 1906, at the
special meeting of the club to make arrangements for the banquet, it was
agreed that Mrs. Cohen, the hostess, should be given five dollars for her
services. Another significant act of this meeting was the passing of the
motion made by Ogle, that the open hand should be the sign of the
affirmative vote and the closed fist for the negative vote. After making
the arrangements for the initiation the meeting was adjourned.
