Supervisor encourages officers through praise and acknowledgement, councils them as needed,
and consistently demonstrates a concern for subordinates. They are less concerned with rules and
regulations and ensuring that paperwork is produces.

What is the innovative supervisor style?

These supervisors generally encourage those supervised to embrace new philosophies and
methods of policing. They delegate decision making, refrain from telling officers how to handle
a situation, and seldom intercedes and takes over incidents.

What is the active supervisor style?

This supervisor leads by example and is actively involved alongside those supervised. They are
characterized by directive decision making, a strong sense of supervisory power, and a relatively
positive view of subordinates.

What is the basic unit of an organization?

What is a group?

Two or more people who interact with an influence eachother for a common purpose.

What two factors are important to the definition of a group?

What are formal groups?

What is a horizontal clique?

Cuts across departmental lines, usually involving first line supervisors, and is both offensive and
defensive depending on threats from above.

What is a random clique?

Usually consist of more of a friend group that often gets together after shift.

What is a vertical clique?

Usually is within a certain unit and include the first line supervisor of that unit who is protective
of their people and the people are protective of their supervisor.

Orientation, conflict/ challenge, cohesion, delusion, disillusion, and acceptance.

What are group norms?

Techniques members of a group develop as a way of controlling the behavior of others.
