Chapter 2
2.1 What is a research strategy?
Good research is valid both internally and externally:
Internal validity: you select a type of research that allows you to answer the
research question. You make a justifiable decision of qualitative research or
quantitative research.
External validity: its potential to be used as a source of conclusions about the
targeted population. Using a sample means using your population as the basis for
drawing a representative sample used a form of generalization for the entire
population.
Research strategy:
1. Which research design do you use?
2. Which unit of analysis do you use: population or sample?
3. How do you measure the constructs?
Which research design do you use?
If you want to describe or look for the explanation to a problem, you choose a survey.
You investigate a problem, its size and scoop. All descriptive research. An exploratory
survey usually deals with questions of why.
Survey
Experiment
Which unit of analysis do you use: population or sample?
Units of analysis: the people to whom you want the results of you study to apply.
Population: complete set of cases or group members (total number of units).
Census: collection and analyses of data from every possible case or group
member in the population.
Issues: expensive, and not all members can be accessed.
Sample: sub-group or part of a larger population.
Unit of analysis: about WHO
Construct: WHAT are you going to study
2.2Which type of quantitative research design is suitable?
