D218 MXM2 Task 1
Personal Development Plan
Three ways in which I can apply strategies to increase resilience and self-care that will
influence my professional practice in healthcare are practicing mindful meditation, weekly
massages and incorporating more protein in my diet.
In order to achieve my plan to incorporate meditation in my practice, I will follow my
SMART goal. My specific goal is to decrease stress, improve sleep and prevent burnout in my
current role as a bedside RN so I can continue to work in this position. I will practice mindful
meditation for 10 minutes per day, at least 5 days a week for 6 months.
Meditation has many benefits. One specific and measurable goal is improved sleep
hours and quality. I will wear my apple watch while sleeping to track the amount of time I sleep
and the actual quality of my sleep. Thankfully, the apple watch is equipped to provide me with
this data. This goal is attainable because I only need to set aside 10 minutes per day, 5 days per
week. This is not a large time commitment and I can easily incorporate it into my schedule. This
is a realistic and achievable goal.
This goal is relevant to me because I want to prevent burn out. I work as a bedside nurse
which can be extremely emotionally taxing. Preventing burnout is key for me to stay in this
nursing position. I also work the night shift so meditation will also assist with sleep quality.
My actionable step to achieve this goal is practicing meditation 5 times per week, 10
minutes per day for 6 months. My deadline for this goal is 6 months. I will then evaluate the
efficacy of meditation in preventing burn out and improving my sleep.
This goal fosters personal development by preventing burnout and preventing stress. By
preventing stress and burnout, I will be more empathetic and patient when at work- both with
staff or patients. Meditation will make me more approachable and increase my emotional
capacity. I will be able to be present in the moment when patients or families need me because I
am not experiencing compassion fatigue.
In order to achieve my plan to incorporate weekly massages in my schedule, I will follow
my SMART goal. My specific goal is to reduce fatigue and generalized pain in my current role as
a bedside RN so I can continue to work in this position. I will get weekly 90 minute massages for
one month and evaluate the effects.
Massage has many benefits. One specific and measurable goal is reduced pain. I will
rate my pain 0-10 twice daily in the morning and in the evening. I will assess my twice daily pain
