Acetylsalicylic Acid (Aspirin)
antiplatelet, increases coagulation times, hepatotoxic,
visual/hearing changes, GI bleed
Activated Charcoal (Actidose)
antidote/absorbent; do not give with alkali agent/petroleum
products, hold if convulsions, dysrhythmias, or bloody emesis
occurs
Acyclovir (Zovirax)
antiviral - herpes, varicella; nephrotoxic
Alteplase Recombinant
thrombolytic agent, occluded catheters, dose related problems,
do not take NSAIDS/Aspirin
,Aluminum Hydroxide (Amphogel)
antacid, toxicity causes dementia, hypercalcemia, metabolic
acidosis, worsening HTN, CHF
Ampicillin
watch for allergic/anaphylactic reactions, stop if mild diarrhea
develops, take probiotics
Atropine Sulfate
anticholinergic, ophthalmic use
given pre-op to decrease secretions
can cause paralytic ileus
contraindicated with narrow angle glaucoma, myasthenia gravis,
GI obstruction
more pronounced in children with blue eyes, blonde hair, Down
Syndrome
, Beclomethasone Diproprionate
inhaled corticosteroid
Benztropine Mesylate
anticholinergic/antiparkinsonian
Buspirone (Buspar)
anxiolytic/anti-anxiety; takes 7-10 days for a response, 3-4 weeks
for full effect
- when switching, taper benzos
- less likely for cognitive impairments than other drugs
Chlordiazepoxide Hydrochloride (Librium)
anxiolytic, sedative/hypnotic benzodiazepine; do not stop abruptly,
watch for dependency
- respiratory distress, photosensitivity, suicidal tendencies,
paradoxical reaction
- peak: 1-4 h PO, 15-30 min IM
