Title: The Effects of Unemployment on the Mental Health of Youth in Urban South
Africa

Abstract

This research explores the psychological effects of unemployment on youth in urban
South Africa, with a focus on depression, anxiety, and perceived self-worth. Youth
unemployment rates remain high in the country, and evidence suggests that prolonged
joblessness contributes to serious mental health issues. The study will adopt a
qualitative research approach using semi-structured interviews with unemployed
individuals aged 18–30 in Johannesburg. The study is grounded in Erikson’s theory of
psychosocial development, particularly the stage of identity vs. role confusion, as well
as Jahoda’s latent deprivation model. Data will be thematically analysed to uncover
common experiences and emotional responses linked to unemployment. Ethical
practices will be rigorously followed, including informed consent, confidentiality, and
referral to mental health support where needed. This research aims to inform
interventions for youth mental health in high-unemployment contexts and promote the
development of policy-responsive support systems.

Introduction

Unemployment is not only an economic issue—it has profound psychological
implications. In South Africa, youth unemployment is among the highest globally, with
recent figures estimating that over 60% of individuals aged 15–24 are unemployed. This
is especially true in urban centres like Johannesburg, where job competition, migration,
and inequality intersect. While various quantitative studies have explored the economic
and social impacts of unemployment, the mental health dimension, particularly among
young adults, remains underexplored in local contexts.
