,1.1 Introduction
⚫ Mechanics is a branch of the physical sciences that is
concerned with the state of rest or motion of bodies
subjected to the action of forces.

⚫ Mechanics of Materials is a branch of mechanics that
studies the internal effects of stress and strain in a
solid body.
OR
⚫ It is a study of the relationship between the external
forces applied to a body and the stress and strain
caused by the internal forces with in the body.

⚫ Stress is associated with the strength of the material
from which the body is made, while strain is a
measure of the deformation of the body. 2

, 1.1 Introduction
Structural elements can be
subjected to four different types of
resultant loading:
Pull
⚫ Normal Force, N: This force acts
perpendicular to the area. It is
developed whenever the
external loads tend to push or Push
pull on the two segments of the
body.

⚫ Shear Force, V: The shear force
lies in the plane of the area and
it is developed when the Shear Force
external loads tend to cause the
two segments of the body slide 3
over one another.
