classroom supports the development of critical thinking and problem-solving
skills in learners?

Integration of Digital Technologies
Digital technologies can be integrated into the classroom in ways that go beyond
surface-level engagement to actively promote higher-order thinking. Tools such as
interactive simulations (e.g., PhET for science or GeoGebra for maths), concept-
mapping software, coding platforms, and data-analysis apps can be used to challenge
learners to apply, analyse, evaluate, and create knowledge. For example, using a real-
time polling app like Mentimeter or Kahoot, learners are not just answering questions
they are reflecting on concepts and defending their reasoning, often in peer discussions.
This kind of active, learner-centred use of digital tools fosters deep cognitive
engagement (Blaschke, 2012).
Development of Critical Thinking
To develop critical thinking, digital technologies must be used in ways that require
learners to engage with multiple perspectives, reflect on evidence, and draw reasoned
conclusions. For instance, when learners use online discussion platforms (like Padlet or
a moderated LMS forum), they are exposed to peer reasoning and must justify their own
viewpoints. Learners can also evaluate the reliability of online sources using digital
literacy tools such as CRAAP checklists integrated into web-based research tasks.
These activities require learners to make judgments based on criteria, which is central
to critical thinking (Facione, 2015). Importantly, teachers must scaffold this process by
modelling critical questioning and providing feedback that encourages deeper reflection.
