Assignment 3 (2025)
Evaluating the Appropriateness of Two Texts for Intermediate Phase FAL
Classrooms in South Africa

Introduction

Choosing suitable reading materials for learners in the Intermediate Phase First
Additional Language (FAL) classroom is a key aspect of promoting both language
development and broader personal growth. This evaluation explores the
appropriateness of two prescribed texts based on four essential aspects: their relevance
to the age group in terms of language and themes, the moral and ethical lessons they
present, their ability to support emotional and psychological development, and how well
they encourage inclusivity and cultural diversity. The aim is to determine whether these
texts effectively support the academic and personal development needs of learners
aged 9 to 12 in South African classrooms.

1. Age Appropriateness in Style and Themes

For a text to be effective at the Intermediate Phase level, it should use language and
content that learners can relate to and understand easily. The first text employs clear
sentence structures and everyday vocabulary, making it accessible to learners who are
still building their English language skills. It also uses storytelling methods like dialogue
and descriptive imagery to keep learners engaged. The themes—such as building
friendships, learning from mistakes, and personal growth—are highly relatable for
learners in this age group, helping them connect the story to their own lives.

The second text, while creative, includes more complex vocabulary and abstract ideas
that may be difficult for some learners to fully grasp. Although it presents exciting
adventures, its language level and themes may not align as well with the cognitive
abilities of most Intermediate Phase learners.

2. Moral and Ethical Development

Literature plays an important role in teaching young readers about values and
responsible behavior. The first text introduces moral lessons in a clear and age-
appropriate way. Characters learn the value of telling the truth, respecting others, and
making thoughtful decisions. These lessons are woven into the story in a way that
encourages learners to think critically about their own actions and choices.

On the other hand, the second text touches on moral ideas like bravery and fairness,
but these messages are sometimes unclear or not followed through. Some character
actions are not properly resolved or questioned, which could lead to mixed messages
about what is right or wrong. For this reason, the first text is more effective at supporting
learners’ understanding of ethical behavior.
