Kinderpoësie is ‟n vorm van poësie wat spesifiek vir kinders geskryf is. Dit weerspieël die
manier waarop kinders na die wêreld kyk en sluit temas in waarmee hulle maklik kan
identifiseer, soos diere, spel, familie en emosies. Die taalgebruik is eenvoudig, die beelde is
konkreet, en die ritme is maklik om te volg. Kinderpoësie het dus die doel om kinders se
aandag vas te vang en hul verbeelding te stimuleer. Dit moet verstaanbaar wees vir jong
lesers en hulle help om emosioneel en kognitief te ontwikkel (Van Graan et al. 2018:18).
Een van die belangrikste eienskappe van kinderpoësie is dat dit dikwels vanuit ‟n kind se
perspektief geskryf is. Die gedigte gebruik gereeld humor, klankspel en ritme om ‟n speelse
en leerbare ervaring te skep. Rym, herhaling en eenvoudige beelde is algemene tegnieke.
Verder is dit belangrik dat die gedigte maklik onthou en voorgedra kan word. Dit help met
klankbewustheid, taalontwikkeling en woordeskatuitbreiding (Van Graan et al. 2018:19).
