1.1.1 What is a Language-Rich Environment? (5 marks)
A language-rich environment is one in which learners are immersed in spoken and
written language throughout the day. This includes meaningful conversations, print
materials, storytelling, and songs that stimulate verbal expression, listening, reading,
and writing skills. It allows learners to acquire vocabulary, grammar, and communication
competence in natural, supportive settings (Department of Basic Education [DBE],
2011; Vygotsky, 1978).
1.1.2 Two Classroom Activities to Develop a Language-Rich Classroom (6 marks)
Activity 1: Interactive Storytelling
Children sit in a circle and participate in telling a familiar story.
The teacher prompts them with open-ended questions, encouraging vocabulary
use and sentence building.
Objective: Encourage listening and expressive language development.
