Question 1
1.1 Differentiate between the assessment types below by evaluating their
importance in teaching and learning
1.1.1 Assessment as Learning
This kind of assessment happens when learners think about their own learning.
It means learners look at their work and ask themselves what they are doing well
and where they need to improve. The teacher helps by giving small tips and
support, but the learner is in charge. For example, a learner may write in a journal
about what they learned and how they felt about the lesson.
This type of assessment helps learners become responsible for their own learning.
It teaches them how to think deeply and how to improve by themselves.
According to Earl (2003), assessment as learning helps learners become more
aware of their thinking and helps them set learning goals. It builds confidence and
independence, which are very important skills in life.
1.1.2 Assessment of Learning
Assessment of learning is also called summative assessment. This kind of
assessment is used to check what learners have learned at the end of a topic or
term. Examples include final exams, tests, and assignments that are marked.
The teacher gives the marks to show if the learner passed or failed.
This type is important because it helps teachers, parents, and the government
know how learners are doing. It is used to give feedback and report on progress.
But, it does not always help the learner improve because it comes after the
learning has already happened (Guskey, 2003).
, 1.1.3 Assessment for Learning
This is also called formative assessment. It takes place during the learning
process. The teacher uses it to see if the learners understand what is being
taught. It helps the teacher change or improve teaching so that all learners can do
better. Examples include asking questions during class, using short quizzes, or
group discussions.
This assessment helps learners because they get feedback while they are still
learning. It gives them a chance to fix mistakes and improve. Black and Wiliam
(2009) say that assessment for learning helps learners understand their goals and
how to reach them.
