Keywords: McDonalds “If I had a brick for every time I’ve repeated the phrase Quality, Service, Cleanliness and Value, I think I’d probably be able to bridge the Atlantic Ocean with them.” – Ray Kroc (founder of McDonald’s System, Inc., a predecessor of the McDonald’s Corporation) (McDonalds Corporation, 2020) Origins From his entrance into World War I attempt as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross at age 15, piano player, and salesman, Ray Kroc was always looking for future endeavor. In 1954 he ate at small restaurant in San Bernardino, CA who had a limited menu, but quality food. He studied the operation and met the brothers that ran the restaurant, Dick and Mac. In 1955, he became their franchising agent. Ray Kroc founded McDonald’s System, Inc. in 1955, (McDonalds Corporation, 2020) “a predecessor of the McDonald’s Corporation, and six years later bought the exclusive rights to the McDonald’s name and operating system. By 1958, McDonald’s had sold its 100 millionth hamburger.” What type of leadership is visible at this corporation? According to Adair (Adair, 1973), the functions of leadership can be broken own to three steps (1) accomplishing the task, (2) maintaining the team and (3) meeting the individual needs of the team members. Due to Ray Kroc’s philosophy (McDonalds Corporation, 2020) “was based on the simple principle of a 3-legged stool: one leg was McDonald’s franchisees; the second, McDonald’s suppliers; and the third, McDonald’s employees. The stool was only as strong as the three legs that formed its foundation.” The overlapping of requiring the employees to accomplish their tasks within a narrow scope of supervisors of less than 5 employees to hone WEEK THREE ASSIGNMENT 4 This study source was downloaded by from CourseH on :3226:014 GMT -05:00 their effectiveness and ability to train in real time. Unlike a linear or flat organization where you would have a wide span of control and be unfamiliar with everyone’s jobs or even the employees, the narrow supervisorial scope enables team leading and enables supervisors to help their employees progress and build trust within the work environment. Due to the franchise nature of the business, the supply line is static and only fluctuates by sales and spoil, this allows the leadership to focus on replicating the menu items, speeding up time of service, and customer experiences. The leadership style of McDonalds was studied in 1989 by Larson and LaFasto (Effectiveness Of Leadership At Mcdonalds Management Essay, 2018) and they determined that it was effective teamwork that led to the motivation and strong relationship even though the leadership style most used is autocratic. How does this organization help managers develop their skills? McDonalds encourages performance of the individual within their assigned team and allows people to apply for leadership positions as they see fit, they also have an open door policy where team members have the ability and are encouraged the voice their concerns to management, no matter how new they are. Annual competitions are held to allow team members to submit their ideas for changes to process or tools for speeding up production or eliminating waste. Showing everyone that their ideas are important and giving voice to concerns that may become a trend. Does the style and skills of its managers appeal to you? Why or why not? While I was in the Marine Corps, autocratic leadership was the default setting, but I saw a huge advantage as I got more senior by gaining buy-in from the subordinates and peers I led. Sometimes my linear thought for a project was not the best way to accomplish the task and be successful in a limited timeframe, when I told them the mission and what the goal, I would open WEEK THREE ASSIGNMENT 5 This study source was downloaded by from CourseH on :3226:014 GMT -05:00 it up for ideas. The first few times, I had nothing but silent Non- Commissioned Officers and junior Marines. After a brave Lance Corporal spoke up with a good idea, I made it part of the plan and put him in charge of that portion. It was not a complete success as a task, but we all learned a better way to do it and he was the duty expert during the limited time for the exercise. We had to adjust a few things, but he did great and we awarded him with a half-day off. The next time I asked for ideas, I was flooded with buy-in. How important is having business vision to the success of this organization? Explain. Vision is required for successful planning and execution. If you fail to make a plan, your plan will fail. Vision is a goal that needs to be obtainable, otherwise the failure will be eventual and more demoralizing to those involved from the beginning. Vison and mission statement must be broad enough that the whole organization can understand and work toward the vision, even if they are a supporting and don’t have “eyes on” as the project progresses. (Adair, 1973) This is when maintaining the team is important while fulfilling the needs of the team members. How would you apply situation leadership at McDonald’s? Explain. Given my experience in managerial roles I would use combination of Maslow’s theory the hierarchy of human needs (Maslow, 1943) and the Adair’s different approaches to leadership (Adair, 1973), specifically focusing on the safety of thought and expression at work and have open communication with the team and individuals of the team. In the Marine Corps we always had two missions: Mission Accomplishment and troop welfare, I would argue you don’t have to choose between which is first. I love the two quotes by Richard Branson below:
