What is the balanced notion of personal responsibility and outcome attitude?

Says that you should accompany people on their journeys, not take the journey for the patient.

If a helper has no sense of personal responsibility in helping another person, the helping will
most likely not be successful

Over-excessive personal responsibility is also a problem when the clinician completely feels at
fault for what happens to a patient. It is unrealistic for everyone to be saved and to put blame
fully on one person.

Mistakes can hurt trust and self-confidence; need to create environment where patient
understands what happened and how to proceed; support and help colleagues when they make a
mistake

What is the Compassionate empathic concern vs emotional detachment or emotional
engulfment?

Empathic arousal increases intrinsic motivation to help another person. Empathy increased
internalized values of what to do = autonomous motivation.

When one is emotionally detached it removes empathic arousal and thus reduces the motivation
to help while overly empathetic will cause clinicians to become overly-obsessive with a
patient/case to the point their viewpoint is skewed and they may miss something or become
emotionally overwhelmed and distressed.

Important to balance clinician and patient's perspectives of what they want/need. Overly

, involved = self-other merging

Good self-other distinctions underlies empathy-based altruism

What is the being centered attitude?

Focussed awareness while completing a task

Ability to concentrate with distractions while managing emotions (all parties)

Ability to shift mental states smoothly and genuinely (emotionally present)

Mental state of optimal emotional managment and problem solving; fully present with the patient
in the situation at hand and not rushing to move on with treatment

What is the Lifetime of caring as a story with succession of awakenings attitude?

Founded on the idea that people become more compassionate as they age.

Journey comes with many ups and downs, learn to weather them.

Periods of emotional detachment or severe over-attachment are seen as temporary steps in the
transformation process

What is the Wounded-healer archetype attitude?

Everyone has a "would" that has a potential to heal

Must first become aware of the wound and then understand and learn from it

Clinicians become grounded in their own humanity when they are suffering by being grounded
in their own humanity. This allows them to connect with themselves and patients better.

With a better emotional understanding, clinicians are more understanding/empathetic, and less
judgemental which yields greater effects on the patient
