Africa before the introduction of CAPS.
(3 × 2 = 6 Marks)
Answer:
Prior to the implementation of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement
(CAPS), South Africa underwent several curriculum transformations to address the
inequalities of the apartheid era. Three significant policies developed to transform
education in post-apartheid South Africa include:
1. Curriculum 2005 (C2005):
o Introduced in 1997 as the first post-apartheid curriculum.
o Emphasized outcomes-based education (OBE), learner-centeredness,
and critical thinking.
o Aimed to promote social justice, equity, and inclusivity in education.
2. Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS):
o Implemented between 2002 and 2005 as a revision of C2005.
o Clarified learning outcomes and assessment standards.
o Simplified the content and structure while retaining OBE principles.
3. National Curriculum Statement (NCS) Grades R–12:
o Developed to unify and streamline the curriculum from Grades R to 12.
o Introduced a structured framework across all subjects and grades.
