What is art and what is culture?
Art is the creative expression of ideas, while culture is the broader framework of shared
beliefs and practices within a society. Art both reflects and influences culture, playing a
central role in human life.
What is the difference?
Art is a creative expression that can be individualistic or collective, while culture is a
social system of shared behaviors, beliefs, and values that influence and define how people
live.
Art can influence culture, and culture shapes art, but art is generally focused on
aesthetics and emotion, whereas culture encompasses a wider range of social practices and
norms.

What functions or roles does art have in society?
In the past…
In the past, art served multiple roles in society: it was used in religious worship, political
propaganda, and historical documentation. Art educated people, critiqued social issues, and
provided beauty and entertainment. It also expressed cultural and personal identity,
symbolized wealth, and offered emotional or spiritual healing. Overall, art was essential for
reflecting and shaping various aspects of life.
Since the 1800s - the modern age…
Since the 1800s, art has served as a powerful tool for social commentary, cultural identity,
emotional expression, innovation, and community engagement, while reflecting modern life
and raising awareness of key issues.

Does art have a different function or role in non-Western societies?
In the past…
In non-Western societies, art historically served to preserve cultural traditions, support
spiritual rituals, and reinforce community values. It was deeply integrated with daily life and
ceremonial practices, often reflecting broader social and spiritual beliefs.
Since the mid-2oth century and post- colonialism…
In non-Western societies post-colonialism, art often reclaims cultural identity, preserves
traditions, and addresses contemporary issues, blending traditional and modern
expressions.

What am I most into in terms of art and culture?
I am mostly into interior design architecture: Interior design architects design the interior
spaces of buildings, such as homes, offices, and retail stores. It really focuses on the
functionality of space, which I am really interested in because I am constantly rearranging
my room and organizing all my school, makeup and clothes into containers and drawers.
Also at the moment I am watching Suits on Netflix, it is about an American legal drama
television series. It focuses on Harvey Specter and Mike Ross winning cases, it contains lots
of drama and I really enjoy watching the inside of the legal careers in New York.

Abroad travel
Yes, have traveled abroad, infact, I have even lived abroad in the younger years of my life,
When I was around 2 years old I moved to South africa, though I can't remember this, when I
was 4 years old we moved to denmark, again, I can't really remember much from this. After
that we moved to California, USA. Here I do remember lots from. I do see a big difference in

, these 2 countries as I think the Netherlands has a better quality of life in health care, civil
rights and political stability. Though at the age of 7 I wasn't concerned with this, and I mostly
notice the difference in weather and in the shopping centers, as everything is much bigger.

Cultural discipline Why does this discipline (not) appeal
to you?

Photography On vacation I really enjoy taking pictures of
my view, food, ect.

Music I often listen to music, whether I am biking
to school or doing my homework. I cancel
out any other sounds from around me.

Theater I don’t often go to a theater but it is fun to
watch a play. Last year I went to Soldaat
van Oranje and it really left me speechless!

Dance The examination of various dance forms
and their cultural background dont really
appeal to me. But I also have never seen
one, so maybe I should try it out.

Visual Arts I enjoy going to museums, which I
sometimes do with my Grandma.

Literature The study of written works doesn’t appeal
very much to me. Though poetry, novels
and plays sometimes do. This is because I
find it fun and interesting to read, listen and
see these things but taking these things to a
further step, like examining them, doesn't
appeal to me.
