Part 1: Interview
A. Conduct an interview with a school-based professional in your
community on topics related to mental health or emotional well-being, youth
suicide prevention, substance abuse, or child abuse. Identify the following:
• the interviewee’s name and job title Ashli Borchelt, 5th Grade Teacher
• the interviewee’s organization Walton County School District
• the date and time of your interview 11.12.2024 9:30 PM
Note: Do not include any identifying information about students or
community members in your submission.
1. As part of your interview, address the following topics:
a. Identify two specific mental health or emotional well-being issues that
exist within your school community.
Mrs. Borchelt identified two issues, including the issues that social media is
having on students at a much younger age, as well as social issues causing
emotional distress. She stated, "The effect that social media has had on her
students is dire." She said that the students are seeing inappropriate
content for their age, which, in turn, impacts their friendships, engagement
issues at school, and grades and behavior. In addition to the issues social
media is having on students, they are also experiencing social issues.
Students lack coping mechanisms and strategies to quickly overcome
challenges and adapt to change. Many of these issues are due to a lack of
support in their homes.
b. Identify one specific school-based resource for each of the identified
issues and discuss how each of the resources meets the needs of students.
The counselor is the most extensive resource for both of these issues. The
school counselors intervene to provide emotional support to students and
their families. Regarding the effects social media is having, counselors are
often on the backend to mitigate the issues arising from disagreements and
the bullying that occurs on platforms. Unfortunately, there is little time in
the classroom for kids to learn social and emotional skills due to all the
other things that must be taught. A more significant issue is that there
needs to be more counselors to go around, and there needs to be more time
