Five Key Challenges Faced by Learners in South Africa That Lead to School
Dropout
Hunger and Poverty Many learners go to school hungry, which affects their focus
and energy. According to Baumann (2018, p. 7), 2.4 million children reported
going hungry often. Some rely on school feeding schemes for their only meal of
the day.
Unsafe Travel to School Learners walk long distances or take risky transport. In
areas like the Cape Flats, children face gang violence and stray bullets (Baumann,
2018, p. 7). This makes getting to school dangerous and stressful.
Overcrowded and Poor Learning Conditions Classes often have up to 60 learners,
with bare walls and absent teachers. Lessons are rushed, and many learners lose
interest or fall behind (Baumann, 2018, p. 7).
Bullying and Violence Nearly half of Grade 5 learners in no-fee schools are bullied
weekly. Girls face sexual violence from teachers and classmates (Baumann, 2018,
p. 8). Corporal punishment is still used, despite being banned.
Lack of Support at Home After school, learners return to empty homes, do chores,
and face violence. With no help for homework, school becomes less important
(Baumann, 2018, p. 8).
-These challenges show that dropout is not a choice, but the result of many
hardships.
