INTRODUCTION TO ATOMIC STRUCTURE
Welcome to the fascinating world of atoms, the fundamental building blocks
of everything around us! In this document, we'll explore what atoms are
made of, how they are structured, and how the periodic table helps us
organize and understand all the different types of atoms (elements).
At its core, an atom is the smallest unit of matter that retains all the chemical
properties of an element. Think of it like a tiny solar system, with a central
nucleus and electrons orbiting around it. However, this is a simplified model,
and the actual behavior of electrons is more complex, described by quantum
mechanics.
SUBATOMIC PARTICLES: THE ATOM'S COMPONENTS
Every atom is composed of three main subatomic particles:
• Protons: These positively charged particles are found in the atom's
nucleus. The number of protons determines what element an atom is.
• Neutrons: Also located in the nucleus, neutrons have no charge (they
are neutral). They contribute to the atom's mass. Atoms of the same
element can have different numbers of neutrons; these variations are
called isotopes.
• Electrons: These negatively charged particles orbit the nucleus in
specific energy levels or shells. Electrons are much smaller and lighter
than protons or neutrons and are responsible for an atom's chemical
bonding behavior.
THE NUCLEUS: THE ATOM'S CENTER
The nucleus is the dense, positively charged center of the atom. It contains
the protons and neutrons. Despite being incredibly small compared to the
entire atom, the nucleus holds almost all of its mass. The number of protons
