Research Topic
For teachers to provide trauma-informed care to students, they must have an understanding of
what trauma looks like in students and how it affects them in an educational setting. I would like
to create a professional development targeted at elementary teachers that provides resources and
tools on how to understand better their students who have endured trauma in their lives. More
than 38% of children in each state have suffered a traumatic event ranging from the death of a
parent to living with someone with substance addiction (Resilient Educator, 2023). Trauma can
affect how students process curriculum and how they react and understand instruction. Trauma is
prevalent in classrooms, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Students experienced
homelessness, hunger, poverty, and much more. The Trauma-Informed Care Curriculum
addresses a “core set of guiding principles for supporting recovery from trauma and organized
around five key domains: supporting staff development; creating a safe and supportive
environment; accessing needs and planning services; involving consumers; and adapting
policies.”

Elementary teachers are struggling with understanding how trauma can affect their students. This
impacts their ability to understand why their students can be dysregulated in an educational
setting. This problem could happen because trauma-informed learning needs to be evaluated to
determine if it aligns with trauma-informed care learning standards.
Research Question
How can I create a professional development based on trauma-informed practices in the
classroom that teachers can utilize and implement?
Product
My professional development workshop will be created to teach educators trauma-based
practices and their many educational benefits on how to implement them in the classroom. The
course will provide resources, workshops, and self-reflection. This professional development
will align with the problem statement set for the research.
Purpose
My proposed capstone project aims to create professional development that would inform
teachers about trauma and how it affects students in an educational setting. The impact that
trauma has on students and how we as educators can support them with the proper resources and
tools.
Common Research Themes
One theme I noticed while completing my research was how trauma affects students in
multiple ways and what physical signs teachers can see. This theme aligns with my proposed
capstone project’s purpose because the research shows what to identify in a student who has
experienced trauma. The second theme I noticed was how the multiple ways that trauma affects
students’ mental, emotional, social, and behavioral well-being. This theme aligns with my
proposed capstone project’s purpose because the research shows that trauma affects every aspect
