POL Task 1 Psychology of Learning (Western Governors
University).
A: CLASSICAL CONDITIONING
Classical conditioning connects two stimuli, leading to a change in
behavior. (WGU, n.d.). An example of classical conditioning that is
very common is using an alarm clock to wake up. In this example,
the alarm's sound, initially a neutral stimulus, becomes associated
with waking up. This causes your body to wake up and become alert
once you hear the alarm.
B. OPERANT CONDITIONING
Operant conditioning shapes behavior by giving rewards for good
behaviors and punishments for bad behaviors. (WGU, n.d.). An
example of operant conditioning would be rewarding myself for
working out by watching an episode of a TV show I like afterward.
By doing a good behavior, I am rewarding myself.
B1. REINFORCEMENT OR PUNISHMENT
My example highlights reinforcement, which is when something good
follows our action, making it more likely to happen again. (WGU, n.d.).
I reward myself by watching my favorite TV show after I do the action
of exercising.
This will make me more likely to exercise in the future if I know the
reward that I enjoy comes after.
C. OBSERVATIONAL LEARNING
Observational learning is the process of learning by watching others.
(WGU, n.d.). An example would be learning to cook a new recipe by
watching a video of someone else doing it and following the steps.
By paying attention to someone else doing the action, you can
remedy any mistakes you may make and successfully finish the
dish. This will give you a new knowledge of cooking and the
confidence to try more recipes in the future.
