Question 1
1.1 Define the sociology of education.
Sociology of education is the field of study that explores the relationship between
education and society. It looks at how schools’ function within a society, how social
factors such as class, race, and gender influence education, and how education, in turn,
shapes social outcomes. It focuses on how learners, teachers, and institutions interact
in various social contexts to either reinforce or challenge existing social structures.
1.2 What is the meaning of the word ‘education’?
Education refers to the process by which individuals acquire knowledge, skills, values,
and cultural norms. This process happens through formal systems like schools and
universities, and informally through life experiences, family interactions, and community
involvement. Education plays a critical role in preparing individuals for participation in
society, both socially and economically.
1.3 Explain the following concepts:
a) Meritocracy:
Meritocracy is a social system where people's success and progress are based on their
individual talents, effort, and achievements rather than on their social background or
family connections. In theory, a meritocratic society rewards hard work and ability fairly.
b) Social class:
Social class refers to the divisions in society based on economic and social status.
People are often grouped into classes such as lower, middle, or upper based on
income, education, occupation, and lifestyle. These classes can influence access to
opportunities, including education.
c) Solidarity:
Solidarity is the sense of unity and mutual support within a group or society. It reflects
how individuals feel connected to one another through shared values, goals, or
responsibilities, which helps maintain social cohesion and cooperation.
