The Science of Sleep: Why We Sleep and How It Affects Our Body and Mind

Introduction
Sleep is a natural, recurring state of rest for the body and mind. Although it might seem like a

passive activity, sleep plays a critical role in health, brain function, and overall well-being.

What is Sleep?
Sleep is a biological process that helps us recover, process information, and maintain balance. It's

controlled by our internal clock, also known as the circadian rhythm, and regulated by the brain.

Stages of Sleep
There are two major types: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, associated with dreaming and brain

activity, and Non-REM sleep, divided into three stages from light to deep sleep. Each cycle lasts

about 90 minutes and repeats throughout the night.

Why Do We Sleep?
Scientists believe we sleep to consolidate memories, process emotions, regulate metabolism, repair

body tissues, and boost the immune system.

The Impact of Sleep on the Brain
Sleep enhances cognitive performance, attention, and decision-making. Lack of sleep is linked to

mood disorders, reduced concentration, and poor memory.

Sleep and Physical Health
Good sleep regulates blood sugar, supports heart health, aids muscle recovery, and helps with

weight control.
