, The purpose of this essay is to compare-contrast between followership and
servant leadership. Robert K. Greenleaf came up with the dynamics of followership and
servant leadership. For an organization to be successful both qualities are essential.
“Followership, like leadership, is a role and not a destination.” (Michael Mckinney,
2010). This quote perfectly describes that followership and servant leadership are just
roles, they can be switched. As a good follower can learn the qualities from a servant
leader and implement those on themselves, learn how to lead, and become a servant
leader. These two ideologies have a lot in common as well as a bunch of differences.
For an organization to work both are required. “He who cannot be a good follower
cannot be a good leader.” (Aristotle, 384-322 B.C.E), perfectly describes one cannot
work without the other. For followership and servant leadership both make intentional
choices. One makes the choice to lead other to follow.
Secondly, differences need to be understood before talking about commonalities.
As servant leadership and followership overlap quite a bit. In servant leadership the
most important thing is to first be a servant. As the person serves the followers, works
for their welfare. Leader makes sure the needs of the followers are met as without the
followers there will be no leader. By meeting the needs of the followers, leader unlocks
their potential and motivates them to work more proficiently. If the situation dictates, a
good leader can turn any quality of a follower into an advantage for the organization.
The qualities a leader need to possess to succeed are vision, emotional intelligence, gift
of persuasion, and the gift of influence. Some negatives of servant leader are decisions
might take longer since everyone has a voice, and it requires more transparency. For a
leader to become a servant leader is usually a big adjustment.
