1.1. Slavery and the Civil War
- Industrial North and agricultural South → Well-trained craftsmen moved to the
industrialized cities in the north; Southern colonies profited from tobacco and cotton, which
was picked by slaves (cheap labor) -> Their economy was dependent on slave labor

, - Slavery became a major political issue: President Abraham Lincoln was a moderate opponent
of slavery -> 11 southern states formed the confederate States of America, threatening the
existence of the USA by fighting for the sovereignty of the individual states
➢ Lincoln freed the slaves with emancipation proclamation -> Frame for abolition of slavery
- Lots of former slaves stayed on the plantations → White mentality continued to be racist,
Founding of the Ku Klux Klan after the Civil war
- Jim Crow Laws: Racial segregation for all public facilities, legalizing racial discrimination →
“separate but equal”: African American facilities often underfunded or inferior to white Am.
1.2. The civil rights movement
- 1. Stage – Montgomery bus boycott: Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white
person → MLK organized a bus boycott (1955) in which black people organized carpools,
shared taxis or walked to work -> Local bus company lost a bunch of money
- 2. Stage – Little Rock Nine: In Little Rock, nine students defied rioting white crowd and
attended local high school (Before: stopped although racial segregation in schools was illegal)
- 3. Stage – Birmingham: Non-violent protests by men, women and children in Birmingham
were met with violence by the police → Shocked the people as it was televised nationwide
- 4. Stage – March on Washington: All kinds of people marched on Washington DC and it was
one of the largest political rallies for human right in American history -> “I have a dream”
- 5. Stage – From Selma to Montgomery: In 1961, a total of 130 Black people from Selma were
registered -> 3 marches to Montgomery, 1+2 were brutally stopped (abolishing of poll taxes)
➢ Civil rights act (1964) outlawed discrimination based on race, color, or national origin
➢ Voting Rights act (1965) forbade literacy tests as a pro condition for voter registration
1.3. Affirmative Action and Busing
- Fair housing act, equal opportunity and employment act → JFK realized that there might be
the need for positive discrimination, a preferential treatment of black people and other
minorities (affirmative action)
- Racial segregation in schools illegal, many schools though remained uni-racial due to
separate neighborhoods for Black and White people -> Black people often lived in the inner
cities, while White people settled in the suburbia
- Busing: Practice of assigning and transporting students to schools within or outside their
local school districts in an effort to do diversify the racial make-up of schools.

- Renewal of the civil rights movement – Both call for social change and racial equality, using
non-violent protests as political means → Difference: BLM has no single voice demanding
change, like MLK, instead a non-hierarchic collection of activists
- Born by the killing of the unarmed Trayvon Martin, spread numerous incidences of lethal
police violence against Black people
➢ Movement drew attention to systemic racism (Racism based on institutions, norms and
values like anti-black practices, upholding economic/ social inequalities along racial lines)

- Push factors: Religious/political persecution; 2.WW or war in general; Lack of educational
aspects; Environmental problems like climate change
- Pull factors: American Dream “rags to riches”; Homestead act (1862) offered public land for
free to any immigrant; the Gold Rush (1848) attracted lots of people to California
