What Is HIV?
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) attacks the body’s immune system,
particularly CD4 cells (T-cells), making the person more vulnerable to infections. If
untreated, it can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), the final
stage of HIV infection.
How Is HIV Transmitted?
HIV is spread when certain body fluids from a person with HIV enter another
person’s bloodstream. These fluids include:
Blood
Semen and pre-seminal fluid
Vaginal fluids
Rectal fluids
Breast milk
Main Routes of Transmission:
Unprotected sexual intercourse (vaginal, anal, or oral) with an infected
person.
Sharing needles or syringes with someone who is HIV-positive.
Mother-to-child transmission during childbirth or breastfeeding.
Blood transfusions with unscreened blood (rare in South Africa due to strict
screening).
