Section A – Knowledge-based Questions

1) Identify the TWO language skills that can be acquired after a language is
learned.
After someone has learned a language, they can develop two main skills: speaking and
writing. These are the ways we actively use language to communicate with others.
(2 Marks)

2) Explain, in your own words, the difference between receptive skills and
productive skills in communication AND provide an example of a receptive skill
AND a productive skill.
Receptive skills are about taking in information, like when you listen to someone talk
or read a book. You're not creating the language yourself—you’re just receiving and
understanding it.
Productive skills are when you create or produce language, like when you speak or
write something down.
An example of a receptive skill is reading.
An example of a productive skill is speaking.
(4 Marks)

3) According to Nunan (2001:23), hearing, attending, and understanding are three
stages in the listening process. In your own words, explain EACH of these stages
in one sentence.

 Hearing is when your ears pick up sound, but you may not be fully focused yet.
 Attending means you start to concentrate on specific sounds or words and try to
figure out what’s being said.
 Understanding is when you actually make sense of the words you heard and
know what they mean.
