Philosophy of Education as the Creation of Concepts-in-Place in a Complex
World

In a rapidly changing and increasingly complex world, the need to philosophise about
education becomes ever more urgent. Education does not exist in a vacuum; it is deeply
embedded in social, cultural, political, historical, and ecological contexts. African
philosophy of education, in particular, offers a meaningful response to this complexity by
grounding thinking in specific places and experiences. In this essay, I define philosophy
and explore why philosophising about education is important. I then examine the
relationship between place, concepts, and philosophy of education, ultimately arguing
that philosophy of education must be conceptualised as the creation of concepts-in-
place. This conceptualisation, I argue, is essential in shaping educators who are
responsible and responsive to the world they live in.

Defining Philosophy and Its Importance in Education

Philosophy, at its core, is the love of wisdom—derived from the Greek philo (love) and
sophia (wisdom). However, it is more than a mere affection for abstract ideas; it is a
rigorous and critical engagement with fundamental questions about existence,
knowledge, values, reason, and language. Philosophy does not offer final answers but
cultivates the capacity to ask meaningful questions, to think deeply, and to act with
ethical awareness.

In the field of education, philosophy plays a crucial role. It compels us to ask: What is
education for? Who should be educated? How should education be structured? What is
the relationship between the learner, the teacher, and the society in which they exist?
These are not merely technical questions; they are ethical and political, and they shape
the very fabric of educational practice. In a world marked by inequality, ecological crisis,
technological advancement, and cultural diversity, philosophy enables educators to
reflect on their assumptions and to navigate complexity with thoughtfulness and care.
