we listen or read. One example of a receptive skill is listening.
Productive skills involve creating or producing language, such as when we
speak or write. One example of a productive skill is writing.

Hearing is when sound waves reach our ears, but we do not always pay
attention to them.
Attending is when our brains choose which sounds to focus on because we
find them important.
Understanding is when we make sense of the sound or message by using
context and background knowledge.

Critical listening is about judging what is being said by analysing who is
speaking and whether the message is believable or biased.
Informational listening is about getting facts or new information without
questioning the speaker’s purpose.

A person who cannot read will struggle to understand important documents
like job applications or medication labels.
