In research, context refers to the environment or setting in which the study takes place.
It includes all external factors such as historical background, cultural norms, political
influences, socio-economic conditions, geographical location, and institutional
frameworks that can impact the research process and findings.

2. Why is understanding ‘context’ in research important?
Understanding context is vital in research because it shapes the relevance, accuracy,
and applicability of findings. Firstly, it ensures that research questions are rooted in the
realities of the participants. Secondly, context helps researchers interpret data more
accurately, preventing misrepresentations. Thirdly, it guides ethical considerations,
ensuring that participants are treated with cultural and social sensitivity. Lastly,
contextual understanding enhances the credibility and trustworthiness of the study, as
findings are not removed from the lived experiences and conditions of the research
subjects.
