N.B PARAPHRASE YOUR WORK TO AVOID PLAGARISM (CHANGE WORDS)

Question 1.1: Essay — Moving away from traditional teaching in
Mathematics (Measurement focus, Intermediate Phase)

Modern education looks for more in mathematics teaching than just
memorizing or repeating steps. Methods that mainly depend on learning by
heart tend to avoid engaging the learners and helping them really
comprehend the material. In the Intermediate Phase, since measurement
concepts are more advanced, teaching students to take part in their education,

, explore and learn truly is key. This essay looks at why teachers in Grades 4-6
need to change their ways in teaching math, especially measurement. Some
examples taken from different educational standards, someone’s own
studying history and educational theories will prove why involving learners
encourages mastering concepts as well as competencies.

The difficulties with traditional classroom mathematics apart from AI

Traditional ways of teaching math usually involve a teacher talking, students
memorizing equations and repeating exercises. For example, before, teaching
measurement meant mainly focusing on learning units of length or conversion
tables with little relevant context. Applying this method usually leads to
memorizing facts, but not using them in daily life.

Involving students and giving them active learning roles

CAPS believes that in mathematics, students should see it as both vibrant
and meaningful. Techniques in teaching measurement are often hands-on
such as once again measuring classroom things with rulers and comparing
the lengths or weights of everyday things. Rather than just telling about
centimeters and meters, students could measure objects using these units
and compare which helps them appreciate the differences better.

Strongly incentivize learning by allowing learners to explore ideas.

Being encouraged to explore topics can help learners stay more involved.
Giving learners things like measuring tapes, scales or water containers helps
them understand measurement by practicing. Students look at different
objects, guess the outcomes of their experiments and check if their
predictions are accurate. Doing real-life tasks helps students connect and
understand difficult concepts.

The use of new technologies

Using digital measuring tools or interactive simulations also supports students
being more involved. A good example is virtual lessons where learners
interact with measurements which makes the concepts come to life and stay
with them.

Studies and case studies from schools

I was taught measurement mainly through remembering the values and units
which had very little meaning for my practical life. In other words, present-day
programs promote using everyday examples, as seen in projects about
cooking or gardening that involve mathematics to help new skills seem useful.

Finally, shifting from traditional, teacher-centered, rote learning approaches to
active, learner-centred, and contextualised methods improves students'
comprehension and appreciation of measurement in mathematics. Such
