Ahn, R., Gonzalez, G. P., Anderson, B., Vladutiu, C. J., Fowler, E. R., & Manning, L. (2020).

Initiatives to reduce maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity in the United

States: A narrative review. Annals of Internal Medicine, 173(11_Supplement), S3-S10.

Ahn, R., et al. 2020, gives an in-depth look at the many programs and policies that were

prenatal care and the death rate for mothers between 1989 and 2015. The study uses a

differences-in- differences design to account for variables that could affect the results. It finds

that expanding Medicaid was linked to a 12% rise in women getting the care they needed

before they got pregnant and a statistically significant 11% drop in overall maternal mortality,

with a 26% drop among Black women. This shows that growing health insurance can help

reduce gaps by making
