1. Historical/Background Newspaper or Magazine Article

Gupta, Aashish, et al. “Excess Mortality in India During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A New
Estimate Using Civil Registration Data.” PLOS Global Public Health, vol. 1, no. 7,
2021, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8662181/.

This scholarly article estimates excess mortality in India during the COVID-19 pandemic using
civil registration data across multiple states. The authors, a team of demographers and public
health experts, argue that official COVID-19 death figures significantly underreport the actual
toll. Their findings indicate that India may have experienced up to 3.2 million excess deaths,
challenging the narrative presented by official statistics.

This article will be used in my research to provide empirical evidence on India's pandemic’s
human cost, contrasting with the government's official data. It complements Kaushik Basu’s
argument by reinforcing how limited or skewed data can distort public understanding of crises.
The article will serve as a critical data source in discussing the broader social and economic
effects of COVID-19 in India and will help in analyzing the gap between reported figures and
lived experiences.

2. Exhibit or Example Source

World Bank. “Poverty & Equity Brief: India.” World Bank Group, 2023.
https://databank.worldbank.org/source/poverty-and-equity

The World Bank's Poverty & Equity Brief is a comprehensive, data-driven report updated
annually. Using standardized global measures, it presents statistical information on poverty rates,
inequality, and household income levels. According to the 2023 brief, India’s poverty headcount
ratio declined from 22% in 2011 to 10% in 2021 based on the $2.15/day international poverty
line. However, disparities remain high among different demographic groups.

This document will be central to the statistical framework of my paper. I will use it to
demonstrate India’s measurable progress against poverty and interrogate how national averages
conceal more profound socio-economic inequalities. It sets up the need for a multidimensional
perspective, which will be discussed more deeply in the next source from NITI Aayog.
