1.1 Introduction Paragraph (±200 words)

, QUESTION 1 [35 marks]

Respond to the following questions. (One mark per fact.) 1.1 Write a short
paragraph in which you introduce yourself to us. The information you share
should include your name; the town and province you live in; your age group in
decades (twenties, thirties, forties, etc.); whether you have any children of your
own and what you currently do on your career path (full-time student, working in
a bakery, etc.) (5)

My name is Portia Modise I currently reside in sunnyside located in the gauteng
province . I am in my twenties and currently enrolled as a full-time student at the
University of South Africa (UNISA), pursuing a qualification in psychology because I
have always been passionate about understanding human behaviour and helping
others. I do not have any children of my own yet, but I have a deep appreciation for
children and their emotional and psychological development, which is one of the
reasons I chose this field of study.

Prior to my academic journey, I worked in various part-time positions in my
community, including tutoring high school learners in Life Orientation and English,
and assisting at a local NGO that provides food parcels and counselling services to
vulnerable families. These experiences opened my eyes to the real-life challenges
people face, especially mental health issues that often go unaddressed. I aim to
become a licensed counsellor or educational psychologist in the future to contribute
meaningfully to both school and community wellbeing. My long-term goal is to make
psychological services more accessible to underprivileged areas where mental
health is often ignored.

1.2 Think about the community you live in. List 5 (five) of the biggest problems
(challenges) experienced by people in your community. Be as specific as you
can about the issues. For example, instead of saying ‘poverty’, name the
reasons why people may be poor. List these issues as 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. (5 x 2 =
10)
