How should bleach solution be stored? - ANS In opaque container with lid- labeled with
strength, time, date and initials.
How often should bleach solution be made? - ANS Daily
What is 1:100 bleach solution used for? - ANS To clean all dialysis surfaces. May clean blood
spills that are less than 10 mL. Soak clamps.
How should clamps be soaked? - ANS In 1:100 bleach in open position for 10 minutes.

,When should 1:10 bleach solution be used? - ANS Blood spills more than 10 mL— you should
soak up blood, then disinfect with 10% bleach solution followed by second disinfection using
1:100 bleach solution.
What items are placed in the sharps containers? - ANS Broken glass( picked up with broom
and dustpan), ampules, syringes with needles( used or unused)
When should sharps containers be replaced? What should you not do? - ANS Close, lock and
replace sharps containers when 2/3 to 3/4 the way full. DO NOT shake to condense the
contents
What is done with the sharps containers in an emergency? - ANS Remove all medical waste
containers (sharps and biohazard) from the treatment floor. Lock lids and place in locked
biohazard room.
What is hepatitis? - ANS inflammation of the liver caused by certain viruses and other
factors, such as alcohol abuse, some medications, and trauma
How is hep A spread? - ANS Fecal oral route
How is hep b and C transmitted? - ANS Blood borne exposure or bodily fluids
How contagious is Hep B? How long can it live on surfaces? - ANS Very contagious. 7 days.
What should you use to clean HBV patients equipment and environmental surfaces with? -
ANS 1:100 bleach solution.
What should be worn when dealing with HBV patients and equipment? - ANS Gloves and a
barrier gown.

Is Hep C as contagious as Hep B? - ANS No, it is not known to survive very long outside of the
body.

Is HIV easily transmitted? - ANS No, it is not known to live long outside of the body.

VRE can live on surfaces for up to : - ANS 7 days
How long should protective measures be used for MRSA and VRE? - ANS Until three negative
cultures( one week apart) have been obtained.
How should VRE/MRSA patients be dialyzed? - ANS They do not require isolation, but should
be seated together away from susceptible patients and should have their own designated blood
pressure cuff, stethoscope, tourniquet, etc. Gloves should be used for all patient and
equipment contact.
